Moscow mayor instructs to install new ventilation system in metro
Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin has instructed Moscow metro managers to replace the whole old ventilation system in the Moscow metro within three years - "a minimal period to fulfil this task without causing inconvenience to passengers," Sobyanin said at a conference on Thursday devoted to the development of the Moscow metro. The mayor also urged to study a possibility of installing ventilation facilities in the already operating metro trains.
During a period of strong heat in Moscow last summer poor ventilation in Moscow metro triggered numerous complaints from passengers. While air temperatures in the city rose to +35 degrees Celsius, at some metro stations thermometers registered record high temperatures of plus 40 Celsius and even higher.
Sobyanin also said that there would be more than 60 new escalators in the Moscow metro. The mayor instructed to revise the schedule of replacement of old escalators to nearer dates. A program of replacement of old escalators has been in effect in the Moscow metro for several years.
